How to Write Convincing Dialogue

Spring 2017

Sharpen your writing skills and challenge yourself to write brilliant, engaging – yet believable – dialogue that connects with your audience. By studying examples from various works, practising in-class, and doing assignments at home, you will gain an understanding of what effective dialogue is, and then learn to create it. By the end of the course, you will know how to write dialogue “from the inside out”, distinguish between “real” and “interesting” dialogue, engage in eavesdropping to hone the ear, practise writing like an actor (using objectives and tactics), understand the difference between “story logic” and “character logic”, and use value shifts to heighten intensity. Bring your desire to learn and experiment! This course is relevant for new, as well as experienced, writers.
