Getting Beyond the First Draft: Editing Your Manuscript for Success November 15, 2016

Do you have a first draft of a manuscript (or most of a first draft) tucked away in a dark desk drawer? Or deposited in banker box in the basement? Wonderful! You are ready for the next step: revision. Whether you cranked out a novel during NaNoWriMo, or you have patches of your memoir that you are ready to stitch together, or you’ve completed the first book in the series of Tolkienesque adventures, this 6-session class will move your book forward in the revision process. Together, we will discuss revision strategies, crystallize your book concept through in-class writing exercises, and workshop key moments from your manuscript. At the end of our time together, you will have peer-feedback, a revision plan to get you beyond your first draft, and a draft of a book proposal. Together we will welcome your tome into the sunshine.

How to Create a Solid Story Structure & Write Great Fiction November 15, 2016

This is your call to action! Step out of the ordinary world and into the extraordinary world of story structure. In this course, we start from the premise that all people have an ear for plot, as it is the rhythm that marches us through fact, fiction, and our own personal narratives. We will explore a variety of story structures, including (but not limited to) Aristotle’s Poetics, the hero’s journey, and the three act structure. In doing so, we will deepen our understanding of the elements of plot thereby sharpening our own storytelling ability. We will start with the basics and gradually move on to more complex writing exercises. By the end of this course, you will have completed a piece of micro-fiction, a short story, a book outline and a first chapter (including a hook and an inciting incident). You will return from our journey to the ordinary world forever changed.
