This comprehensive two-day course stresses foundational must-know information of the workings on any fast-paced film set and is required by all film unions and guilds in BC.

The motion picture industry has high expectations of crew members, their knowledge and expertise, in order to “get the shot and make the day.” Course topics include current filming information, growth and trends in the industry, its collaborative nature, demands and challenges facing production crew, job descriptions, on-set language, location respect, reading and understanding a call sheet, and on-set safety considerations and protocols for stunts and special effects. This immediately practical information could save you on your first week of work.

  • What is the price of the course?

    The total cost of the course is $175.

    Can I register online?

    Absolutely, as long as you are paying by credit card. Unfortunately, we do not accept debit for online registrations.

    How do I register and when can I pay for the course?

    Payment is required at the time of registration. If you are paying by credit card, you may either register online, or call us at 604.984.4901 with your card details. If you would like to pay by debit, cash or cheque, you may register in person at the Continuing Studies and Executive Education office in the Maple Building (MA103). Our campus is located at 2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver, B.C. V7J 3H5.

    How long is the course?

    The Motion Picture Industry Orientation is a 2-day course held on a Saturday (10am-4pm) and Sunday (10am-3pm).

    How old do I need to be to take this course?

    You need to be at least 16 years of age to register for this course.

    Where is the course held?

    The course is held at Capilano University. Our campus is located at 2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver, B.C. V7J 3H5. Classroom information can be found on the confirmation receipt which will be emailed to you once we process your registration. Your receipt will also include the dates and times of your course. If you have not received a confirmation receipt within a week of registering for the course, please email us at with your full name, date of birth, and dates that you registered for, and we will issue you a new receipt.

    What do I need to bring to the course?

    You do not need to bring anything other than a small notepad, stationery, and lunch (as there is no food service on campus over the weekend).

    Do I need to buy a textbook?

    You do not need to purchase a textbook as there will be a course manual provided in class.

    Will there be food available on campus?

    Unfortunately, the university cafeteria is closed during weekends, so you are encouraged to bring a packed lunch.

    Will there be a test?

    Yes, there will be a short test on the second day. It typically takes about 25 minutes to complete. You will need to pass the test in order to pass the course and receive your certificate.

    Is there a deadline to register for this course?

    There is no deadline to register for this course, however, you are strongly encouraged to register as soon as possible, as our sessions fill up very quickly.

    The session I want to register for is full. Can I be placed on a waitlist?

    Absolutely. Please email us at with your full name, phone number, and the session(s) you would like to be waitlisted for.

    Can I be placed on the waitlist for more than one session?

    Yes, you may ask to be placed on the waitlist for all our upcoming sessions, or specific sessions.

    If I register for the next available session, can I remain on the waitlist for an earlier session?

    Yes, it is strongly encouraged that you register for the next available session in order to secure your spot. If a seat becomes available, we will contact you and offer to move your registration to the earlier date for a $35 transfer fee. If you would like to be placed on a waitlist for our earlier sessions, email us at with your full name, phone number, and which session(s) you would like to be waitlisted for.

    Will I be contacted if I don’t get a seat on the waitlist? When is the latest I can expect to hear back?

    No, you will only be contacted if a seat becomes available in one of our earlier sessions and you are the next person on the waitlist. You could be contacted right up until the day before the session you are waitlisted for. For example, if you are waitlisted for the June 11th and 12th session, you may be offered a seat weeks in advance, or on June 10th. If you do not receive a call or email, it is your responsibility to register or waitlist for another session, if you haven’t done so already.

    I’m registered for this course, but I can no longer attend. Can I transfer to another session or cancel my registration? Is there a fee?

    All transfers and withdrawals are subject to a $35 administrative fee. Transferring to a later session is contingent upon availability. In the last 7 days before the start of your course, there are no transfers allowed, and all withdrawals are 100% non-refundable.     Does this course cover WHMIS?

    No, this course does not cover WHMIS. Set safety, on the other hand, is stressed.
